1) The conversation take place in  the neck of the woods( neighborhood, town, or the area where the homless live ).

2) The reporter was interested in three main aspects of homelessness. They are :

c) What it’s like to live from hand to mouth?

3) The homeless man  in his earlier career was working for a big company as a manager!

6.   Move up the ladder = advancing in his career (mean educate your self to find a job).

7.   Let up = the amount of work for the HM in his previous job nver reduced or paused.

8.   Burnt(ed) out = the homless was completly hasted tired and has no energy because of too much work or worry.

9.    At stake = the HM marriage was at risk.

10.   Live on =  have a particular amount of money with which to buy food and other necessities.

11.  That’s wishful thinking! = an attitude or belief that the homlessmen will not find or create a path for getting a job you want to happen will happen even though it is not likely or possible.

his lack of aspiration or enthusiasm for an getting a new job,is showing by this on it as a dream or something unattainable. So he’s not optimistic.
